Dear Friends,
I have observed (mostly on Quora) that it is very common query about how to start our journey for preparing ourselves for any kind of exam related to job. I am listing here very basic steps to start for preparation.
1. Decide for which exam you want to prepare (like UPSC civil services / State services / NDA / SSC CGL / Teacher recruitment exam / CA etc).
2. Read the latest recruitment notice in details to understand the exam pattern (stages of exam - pre/mains/interview, objective / subjective patten, syllabus and eligibility).
3. Read the syllabus of all the exam (pre / mains) in detail.
4. Make up your mind for hard work the exam demands. Now a days it has become very difficult to get a government job due to increased competition. No exam is easy.
5. Make a detailed plan for preparation based on the time available. A student in first year has much more time compared to final year student while preparing for the exam. Bigger the exam, better planning required.
6. Don't jump on the big name books for preparation. start with basic, fundamental and easy books to develop understanding of subject and confidence building. Like if you are planning for civil services, don't jump on books like D D Basu or Shubhash Kashyap. Instead start with 11-12th books for basic understanding of the subjects. Later on, as you grow, start increasing level of difficulty. Don't try to learn swimming in river. Better to start with swimming pool.
7. Take online / offline coaching subscription if you can afford it.
8. Don't underestimate the contribution of mock test, question writing and mock interviews. They will help in gauging the level of preparation.
9. Choose a mentor and regularly stay in touch with him / her. Share everything with him/her.
10. Don't tell your plans except to close ones (parents / mentor only). Not to society and friends. They will know once you get selected.
